Bread and butter #155 (It's time of the year again!)
They are ** and ***.
BUT!
I won't be defeated by them. I refuse to raise my white flag!
I will hand in the statistics by 7th July! (Because I will be on course from 8th to 11th July.)
I will!!!
They can't kill me! Yeah!!!

I am 9 months old!
This is a photo of me at IMM. Daddy and mummy wanted to eat good food without me, so of course I can't give them a good time.
I am a growing child, you know? And I love to eat! How can they eat good food without me!!!
I've finally found something tasty! Yummy yum yum!
Oh yeah, what do you want from me again?
Ah-ha! I'm in a good mood now... you can take all the photos you want.
I want to learn how to drive!!!
But daddy doesn't allow me to... :(
Wait. Daddy, will you please allow me to steer the wheel if I perform some acrobatics? Pretty please...
Boo, daddy still doesn't allow me to drive...

Bread and butter #154 (Back to work!)
But one thing to note is that my energy level feels higher! Yeah! So, a short break from work is actually good... and a constant effort to not think about work-related stuffs is useful too, for the body and soul. I'm now looking forward to my next break. When will it be...?
-hopeful-
Went to school for the first groupwork session for the semester! When I recap the rules with my kids, we decided to implement consequences for not following the rules... And my dear boy proclaimed the importance of one for all, all for one... so he introduced the concept of doing punishment together as a group (that is to put arms around each other and squat down and up), which I thought was good... can enhance their bonding as a group.
Unfortunately and unexpectedly, poor me got caught in this lovely situation of doing the punishment together with them because I am part of the group. Thank you ah... -_- P/S: I managed to bargain successfully- I will do 15 times instead of the proposed 30 times. All the kids have to do it together for 30 times.
Back in office, there are a lot of things for me to do and settle, so I seem slightly busier than usual. I'll continue my working-on-Saturdays kind of schedule from tomorrow onwards. Will try to self-care. Thanks for the reminder, Liwen!
By the way, congratulations to myself, I closed a third one! Bought a pair of gloves for her and decorated them with care. Super positive feedback, super long (2 hours plus!) but nice session but it's all worth it. I hope everything goes well for her in the future.

Bread and butter #153 (Fourth and last day of my leave.)
had late breakfast,
had late lunch too,
uploaded photos on Facebook,
blogged,
selectively checked my work email,
had a short chat with Weishang,
washed the clothes,
did some chores...
Oh man, I can already imagine how I will spend my future weekends if I were to live alone. I will need to do my chores- vacuum and mop the floor, wash the clothes, etc. because I won't have the time and energy to complete those tasks during the weekdays, haha.
Will go back to work tomorrow. The whole day will be lined up with activities- 9am to 9pm. I will decide tomorrow if I have done enough recharging. :)
Bread and butter #152 (Third day of my leave.)
Here's the proposed plan:
What we hope and pray for now is more and more savings! I need ka-ching! What I want now is long trips! Long long trips... I look forward to my long long break at the end of the year. :)
*
Thereafter, had dinner with Grace at Macdonald's, bought groceries, and headed home to continue my nua-ing journey. :)

Bread and butter #151 (Second day of my leave.)
The movie reinforced my belief that if I think that I am special, I will be special. Same for those who faces challenges in their relationship, if you believe that that person is the one, he or she will be the one... it's up to the both of you to make it happen. Fast learner hor, Seng Meng? ;)
Headed east with TW to meet BT, and together, we went to the area near Changi Aloha to do some exploration.
And we spotted the above trail of unknown insects. Oh my, gross.
We had bah kut teh for lunch together with Seng Meng, Kaifen and Jean. My bah kut teh fantasies are fulfilled! Yeah! :D
Go-to-chalet time!
Thanks to Seng Meng, we had a wide array of games to choose from... and our first game was Office Scandal!

Benjamin's favourite card is "promotion for kissing your boss's ass".
Theresa's favourite card is "busted for sexual harrassment".
Thereafter, we shifted to the bedroom for more comfort.
Ugly dolls. UGLY! UGLY! UGLY!
Kaifen and Theresa.
To quote Kaifen: this is a high class dai dee.
Seng Meng cannot stop eating.
From peasant to King... so happy woh!
I'm the King now! No eye contact with me! Look down! Muahahahahaha~
Seng Meng won...
...while Theresa lost badly.
After a sinful dinner, we explored more places and ended off the journey at Changi Beach, where we started to play a stupid game- guess the airline of the aeroplanes that flew past us. Poor SM's right sleeve was slightly out-of-shaped after being continuously pulled by me. :X
We didn't sleep the whole night. Had a long long chat, played XBox and stoned until Wednesday morning when we had roti prata and headed home like zombies.

Bread and butter #150 (First day of my leave.)
2) Relax.
3) Think about anything but work.
BT's beloved bears!
Look! I can balance a tangerine on my head!
Oh-yeah, I love to bathe in the sun...
Sweet! :)
Donuts from Weichuan! Hahaha...
I love the prison visit doodle, heh. :P
Family Day at Chinese Garden!
Questioned by someone.
Laoban questioned by someone. And the funny thing is, laoban replied!
SM trying his best to practise what he has learned on us.
Lovely cakes and a super sweet and encouraging note from SM. :)
Cute drawing again.
Someone being very violent and vulgar.
Sweet stuffs from BT. :) :) :)

Bread and butter #149 (End of GP Groupwork June 2008!)
YEAH!!! After an arduous 4 weeks with the kids, we've finally completed GP groupwork for June 2008 this afternoon! Good job everyone! This song goes out to the GP workers cum superheros of CC!
It reminds me of the video that BT made... the perseverance of each Social Worker... the energy of each kid... the support that parents offered to their kids (especially my cute pa)... the time and effort that everyone of us put into GP groupwork for the past 4 weeks... especially so for BT. You've done a great job. Really. Keep on going!
I will be looking forward to the next round of groupwork. No kidding. Cindy never ever will say die. ;)

Bread and butter #146 (My 2nd GP Night Hike.)
However, it didn't start off well. My boy had poor time management, and was late and uncontactable while my colleague was waiting for his grand arrival. He was unable to explain himself well, and I seriously suspect that he's trying to get away from this. What's with this attitude?! The reporting time was 7.50pm, and up till 8.50pm, he has not reached yet. Not a single call from him, not a single SMS too. It was me, who kept calling and kept asking. I seem to be more anxious than him for him to pass GP. Sometimes I really don't understand why we're more worried for them than they are worried for themselves.
Despite numerous warnings to be respectful to the unknown, there was a boy who didn't care. I wonder why he's playing a fool, and I wonder if he knows what he's dealing with. He does not seem to have an idea of what he's doing, and the consequences of his actions... despite all the advice that the Social Workers have been giving. I wonder how long he will take to get into trouble again.
Also, I'm pretty much disappointed in some youths who displayed poor tolerance, poor sportsmanship, and poor respect... for even the Social Workers. Egocentrism stood out when the youths kept complaining and complaining about their own tiredness and started to forget their mannerisms and basic respect. And to think that others, including the Social Workers, walked through the same distance with them. I'm really thankful that a few girls did not complain at all, and were pretty calm and cool throughout the whole hike. At least I don't have to worry for them.
I wonder what's their difficulty in observing rules and regulations of GP groupwork. They're stated in black and white since session 1, and yet there will be some of them who will break the rules purposely... trying to test our patience. I hate to be the bad guy- to keep giving warnings and to be stern at them. After all, I still want to build a certain level of rapport with them. Yet, they were testing waters towards the end of the hike- calling me names, being very rude and disrespectful, throwing vulgarities as and when they like. What are rules to them? Is it really that necessary to test the waters and try to break the rules one by one?
I'm sorry I have to be stern. I can't bring myself to be gentle, angelic and ever-understanding. I can feel the strain in me when I am incongruent and not doing and saying what I mean. I can feel a strain in me also when I am really angry, but I have to swallow that anger due to my professional responsibilities.
And it doesn't help at all when I kept hearing negative comments everywhere I go. Negative comments add on to the stress level and of course, we don't and won't feel good. I'm sure, to cheer for ourselves is way better than to whine and worry, eh?
There's just some things that I can't and won't understand... I shall not attempt to understand. Guess it will take a lot of patience and time for me to be able to digest it.
I must thank the experienced volunteers (old ginger!) for their help, and Benjamin and Seng Meng who stayed calm and cool throughout the whole hike. Reminds me of my attachment days when they will always assure me that nothing will go wrong, and even if something goes wrong, we'll survive... that is always an important element of our work, which tends to be over-used, yet when used appropriately and timely, it'll act as a magic potion and give strength to those who believe in it... and I guess, that has already became a part of me...
Thanks to those who always believe in me.
Bread and butter #145 (Family Day at Botanic Garden.)
It was raining when I woke up... I was praying that the rain will stop, because I was supposed to hold a Family Day event at Botanic Garden, and it'll be horrible if it rains. (And not to mention, we have GP Night Hike later.)
Upon reaching office, I continued to prepare for the event while pondering about whether I should continue with the Family Day or not. I heard from Germaine that 2 families already called to pull out of it. I myself picked up another call from another family that wished to pull out at the last minute. As the time drew nearer, my student volunteers came. I interacted with them, while playing with the thought of postponing the event. Slowly, clients started to reach our centre...
Unfortunately, only 3 out of 9 families turned up. I was slightly disappointed, but more concerned of how the event will turn out to be- to postpone or to carry on. There might be more families coming if I postpone the event, but I cannot guarantee that the weather will be fantastic on the proposed later date. So, in order not to disappoint the families who came and not to waste the food that has been kindly prepared by my external party, I decided to go ahead with the event.
The families were not really affected by the poor turn-out rate. In fact, they were announcing to me that they will try their best to have fun. I was pleasantly surprised and happy to hear that.
Everything went well, and I got a chance to tour around Jacob Ballas Children's Garden! I am glad that the external party invited young people along, which brought energy to the event. The children were having fun with the young people, while the adults were networking with each other. Yay!
So the whole event turned out to be quite okay- simple and managable. Staying calm is the way to be! Hahahahahahaha...

Blessed.
I'm so blessed to have a friend like you... really touched by your thoughtfulness, and really appreciate the sincere concern that you shower... not only on me, but also your other friends.
Blessed to have you, always reframing situations in a positive manner, always respecting my sharing, always watching out for me, always so nurturing, patient, kind and forgiving.
So happy to know you, Seng Meng.
We've moved on.
The person standing in front of me seemed to be very familiar in the past, but upon more contact, I felt like there's a big void in between our lives. We're on different paths already... and emotionally, there's no strings attached already.
It's a weird, detached, yet pleasant feeling. So, this is what years of non-contact can bring to me- lots of reflection, acceptance, and therefore, peace within my soul. I could take whatever that has happened with grace, and now I'm a much better person. Still pretty confused, but at least I've moved on.
Looking forward to better days.

All I can say after meeting up with Weiping is...
Some things may seem unclear for now... and perhaps, unclear forever.

Bread and butter #143 (ABN Amazing Race!)
Updated on 3rd June 2008:
At 9 plus, the race started... and we ran from One Raffles Quay all the way to Raffles Place MRT station. The teams were required to break a big block of ice with just a screwdriver. Luckily, my boy was pretty strong... and he managed to break the ice in just a short while!!! Woo-hoo, super man! :D
Anyway, we tried very hard to figure out the quiz answer but to no avail. So I decided to help by listing out the MRT stations one by one, starting from Jurong East... Bukit Batok... Bukit Gombak... and BINGO, we got it!
And so, we travelled from Raffles Place to Bukit Gombak. During the MRT ride, the kids did a comprehension about the organizer's history. I wanted very much to help, but upon seeing the paragraphs of words, I was reminded of school days, and I decided to give myself a break, haha. We completed two simple games- turn over a new leaf and balancing a hula-hoop. These are games that I've played before and therefore, I find them pretty boring. Heard from Kaifen that the other teams did rock-climbing. Lao Niang so old liao, still haven't tried rock-climbing lor! I would love to try if I had the chance! Halfway through the journey back to the train station, we were caught in the rain. I was so worried that I will slip and fall... and be a burden to the team, so I walked really carefully despite trailing behind the team, and I tried to catch up when I am on stable ground. Oh yeah, Miss Koh still can run.
-_-
From Bukit Gombak, we chiong to Bishan after analyzing a pictorial map. My boy was so streetsmart! It was so interesting to watch the kids ponder aloud where the hell is Salvation Army HQ... and where the hell can the Toyota sign be found... I seriously have no idea where the place is, so I let the kids lead the way. Thank god, Bishan was correct! When we reach there, we were required to fish for 5 prawns. For every prawn that we cannot catch, we have to beg for 2 prawns from the public. We managed to fish for 5 prawns within 30 minutes. The kids were super happy... and we proceeded to our next pitstop- the Botanical Gardens.
The stop at Botanical Gardens was a horrendous one. We had to locate four different types of trees... and the last tree, Saga Tree, was so challenging to locate. Can you imagine running around Botanical Gardens in the rain just to look for a stupid Saga Tree? And yes, the poor kids got caught in the rain for the second time. I hope they don't fall sick. Anyway, we finally found it after running around Botanical Gardens for about 3 times? The kids then have to face a Fear Factor challenge. They are required to eat stuffs that not a lot of people fancy- for example, bittergourd, century egg, celery, pat tai, and some deep-fried worms. Upon seeing my dear kids getting turned off by the interesting food stuffs, I volunteered to finish half of the mini bitter gourd, and one pat tai. Bleargh.
After much torturing, we were given our clue- that is to travel to Block 32A in Eunos. I will remember this address forever! This is the top horrendous pitstop where all our poor kids have to collect 80kg of newspaper (per team). Inhumane task, I would say. And I highly suspect my arms are aching because of this pitstop. They're aching so badly because I managed to collect a large bag of newspaper when we were about to finish the 80kg. Luckily the GL helped me to carry the bag, if not my arm might have been dislocated. And worse, we had to run in the rain with the newspapers. And this was right after we ran all around Botanical Gardens? I was so worried that the kids will be demoralised, because 80kg seems unachievable. To think that the activity was named "Giving Hope"... wahlao, this is called "Losing Hope" lor. Zum Glueck they did not complain at all... they're just worried about losing the race, haha.
We solved the puzzle (yes, after the inhumane task) and realised that the next pitstop is One Raffles Quay... so we took the train and finished up the last quiz and the remaining questions from the half-done comprehension. When we reached Raffles Place MRT station, we realised that another team was right behind us, and so we tried our very best to run again... Felt that my legs will give way any time while charging towards the finishing point...
-Miss Koh wilts-
Though Miss Koh almost died during the Amazing Race, she has learned quite a number of things along the way. She managed to gain some new insights, and collect some new information, like where the Salvation Army HQ is, wahaha. My another boy was jealous that I was in another team. Seeing that jealous face makes me happier, hehehe.
I love my kids! :)
Bread and butter #142 (Updates updates!)
Had a meeting with laoban again to discuss about future development. It got a bit emotional in the middle, but I was steady enough throughout the meeting. I am now inspired to jot down notes for myself for self-betterment.
In the afternoon, something explosive (this sounds like a direct translation from Chinese) happened during groupwork. I was shocked, and was forced to react fast. Not sure if my reaction was good enough, because that's the first time I dealt with that kind of situation. I could feel my heart beating faster... I was scared. All I could do was to stand up and in front.
30th May 2008, Friday
Brought children for outing. I got kind of pissed off with the attitude of the organizer. They requested me to bring along children from low-income families, and yet the children they themselves invited are those from the higher end. Huh?
Anyway, the organizer got agitated about me wanting to bring along helpers- she saw it as me looking down on her helper's capabilities of handling the children. (She got defensive, and started to say things like - we have organised such events before and they have been successful...) I absolutely held none of such thoughts lor. The objective of me bringing my own volunteers is that they know my children better. That's it. Get it?
Moreover, details of the event were given haphazardly- over just a few emails. When I questioned humbly about the difference between the proposed and the actual event, the organizer snorted at me and said, "I've already told you the details over a phone call some time ago." Alright lor. Fine.
Parents and Teens groupwork in the evening was a blast. I totally enjoyed the session, as expected. It has always been my favourite so far... since two years ago. I enjoyed interacting with the parents, despite having many fellow coursemates who dread to interact with people who are older than us.
This time round, I only have one family involved in the groupwork but I stayed because I want to journey it through with them and allow them to experience my presence. I'm not borned to be a super good Social Worker- I lack all the skills... the theories, but the best effort that I can put into my work is always the time and distance that I'm willing to go for my clients. That's the best I can contribute.
Anyway, I ran after my family's father after the session to ask him how he find the groupwork. He gave me a thumbs-up and said, "VERY GOOD!" And my girl gave me positive feedback too! I was so so so happy that I repeated what they said a few times to my fellow colleagues. I really really hope the parents can come for every session. I am positive they will benefit from our Parents and Teens groupwork. I am sure. :)
Our debrief ended at 11.30pm. And I had to reach office before 7.30am the next morning. Damn, I am a Super Social Worker.
